Full Container Load (FCL) and Less Container Load (LCL)

Two common container options in the world of maritime logistics are Full Container Load (FCL) and Less Container Load (LCL), each with its own characteristics.

Full Container Load (FCL):

An entire container exclusively for your cargo, commonly used when the volume of goods is large enough to fill a full container, usually 20 feet or 40 feet.

  • Exclusivity of use: total control over the container and its cargo, which means there is no sharing with other senders, providing greater security and protection for the goods during transport.
  • Simplicity and efficiency: loading and unloading process is simplified, as there is no need to consolidate loads from different senders, generating faster transit times and less risk of damage to goods.
  • Packaging flexibility: You can pack the goods according to your own needs and safety requirements without worrying about compatibility with other cargo.

Less Container Load (LCL):

On the other hand, LCL is an option used when a shipper’s volume of goods is not enough to fill an entire container. In this case, the shipper’s cargo is consolidated with other cargo from different shippers into a single container.

  • Space Sharing: Multiple loads from different shippers are combined into a single container, which means space is shared between shippers and can result in lower costs for smaller shipments as container costs are shared.
  • Volume flexibility: shipping loads of different sizes, even if they don’t fill an entire container, which is especially advantageous for shippers with variable shipping volumes or smaller, more frequent shipments.
  • Greater operational complexity: due to the need to consolidate and separate multiple loads, the loading and unloading process can be more complex and time-consuming.

Both Full Container Load (FCL) and Less Container Load (LCL) are viable options in maritime cargo transportation, each with its own advantages and challenges.

When deciding between one and the other, they should consider the volume and frequency of their shipments, as well as their specific security, time and cost needs.
